Invigilation strategies

As schools develop strategies to implement the contractual change on invigilation, they will find detailed guidance set out in the WAMG invigilation resource pack. The pack is a key tool in ensuring that options are assessed and plans devised which meet both the requirements of the contractual change and the spirit of the agreement.

Using the pack

The pack identifies aspects which schools should focus on when devising plans to implement for the contractual change on invigilation for all staff. In particular schools must consider the scope of the contractual changeĀ and theirĀ demand profile for invigilation of tests and exams.

Once schools have identified their overall invigilation requirements, they will need to agree the strategies which will meet the requirements of the contractual change and the demand profile.

A consequence of the contractual change is that there will be a significant new area of support staff deployment within schools. Support staff who undertake exam invigilation will be either:

  • existing school support staff, or
  • temporary staff with a dedicated invigilation staff.

In many cases, schools will deploy a mix of these two strategies to meet varying demand profiles at different times of the school year.

In either case, it is essential that schools refer to the good practice section of the WAMG invigilation resource pack when revising job descriptions and gradings or selecting appropriate gradings from local frameworks for dedicated invigilation staff.

The overall adult-to-pupil ratio within the examination or testing room is unlikely to increase as a consequence of implementing the contractual change.
